Dream big do small- The Speech I've made in ToastMaster
Dream Big Start Small - The Speech I Have Made In ToastMaster
I got an IT professional job in Toronto, after three years of layoff from the IT industry. After 6 months of job seeking.Hello following ToasterMaters, my name is Trevor, thank you for taking the time to hear my speech, Today I will share with you my job-seeking story during those 6 months.
When I was 18 years old, I went to university, from Small Island to a big city. I found there are lots of buildings, lots of people, and the big big world. I wanted to see the world, a dream of traveling around the world.
I don’t have money. So I decided to take a bike trip. It is the cheapest way for the student.
In July 2010, my and my classmate spent 15 days cycling around Fujian province, the total distance is about 1300KMS. We visited 9 major cities in Fujian province. All of that just cost us 1000RMB, equal 200 Canadian Dollars. How was that possible?
I made a good plan for the trip. My classmates live everywhere. Before we arrived in a city, we asked someone for help, they provided food and accommodation for us. We use stories to pay.
So I learned three things from this bike trip.
1. set an Achievable goal
2. Before starting, you need to make a good plan
3. If you don’t have enough capability, just ask for help, people like to help you.
After two years, I was in the third year of university, Soon to graduate, I want to do something to commemorate my past youth, so the second bike trip came up. I went to Sichuan-Tibet Road, I spent the whole months, Cycling from Chengdu to Lhasa, The total distance is about 2400KM, And there are two mountains over 5000 meters and more than ten mountains with an altitude of over 4000 meters to climb over by a bike. That means I need to climb one mountain in every 2 days. And I arrived.
I learned something from this trip
1. There is no shortcut for life
2. No one can walk for you, all you can do is walk step by step
I finished my labor work in April. I want to get back to IT, to cybersecurity.
1. I set an achievable goal, I decided to take an enter-level job first.
2. I made a good plan. I participated in 7 programs for 6months.including ESL course, English for Canadian workplace culture program, cybersecurity bridge program and IT certification training program
3. I asking for help. I talked to many people, ask them for help. They gave my suggestion/shared with my resource.
4. I got 4 IT certifications for 6 months.
5. I list answers for the most common interview questions that HR will ask. Practice it all day.
6. I prepared more than 10 IT projects demos that I have done before. Showed it to employers.
7. I applied more 500 job applications and interviewed 25 positions.
Fortunately, I got an IT job.
